Through the years the Naples North Rotary Club has supported many local community efforts.
Near and dear to the hearts of our members is our support of The Shelter for Abused Woman and Children.
We proudly pack over 600 Welcome bags annually for them.
What is a Welcome bag you ask? It is the first step to providing a sense of security to someone just arriving to The Shelter. Individuals and Families can arrive at any hour of the day or night, most have left an aggressive situation and had to flee with only a moment’s notice. They leave without any personal items in most cases, and without any personal hygiene items. Upon their arrival to The Shelter, the staff strive to provide an immediate sense of safety, comfort and sense of home to them. The Welcome bag helps them do that. Packed with essential personal hygiene items they immediately have something to call their own. Men, Women and Children can all be victims of abusive situations so we prepare bags for each.
The average stay at The Shelter is 3-7 days(many just need a chance to contact extended family in order to make living and transportation plans) so the volume of bags that we prepare represents an ongoing need in our community for assistance.
Throughout the year, The Shelter thanks us for the helping hand that we provide. The members of Naples North Rotary is always there to lend a helping hand. In early August we are collecting Back Packs and Back to School supplies to ensure that each child has the required items for their grade level as the school year begins. In December we are collecting to meet the needs of the families who are at The Shelter through the upcoming holidays. The holidays are viewed as such a happy and joyous time for so many, while for others it can bring about a feeling of inadequacy when a parent cannot provide a desired gift for their child. It warms our hearts just knowing the smiles and squeals of joy and laughter that these children of all ages share when receiving their gift.
Naples North Rotary efforts are sometimes done on a more intimate level with The Shelter through matching grant promotions between a member and their employer. Volunteering of time and talents to supports the needs of The Shelter is another way that our members give back. One of our members provides over 300 Piggy Banks on an annual basis to assist in the support of the Financial Literacy Program that is instilled at The Shelter. This program provides the knowledge base that the individuals need so they can feel confident enough to leave The Shelter and know that they are capable of managing their life in ways that they had not previously been permitted to be in control of due to the abusive situation.
Naples North Rotary is passionate about The Shelter whose mission statement is:
“To Prevent. To Protect. To Prevail.”
